Very cheap placements are often on sites built to sell links, with little real readership. A low price is only good value if the site is genuinely relevant to you and run for readers.
A link insertion adds your link to an existing article, so nothing new has to be written or published. A sponsored article is a new piece of content the publisher has to publish and host.
